Born in the Kita region of Mali, Saramba Kouyaté is the descendant of a long line of griots: The Kouyate. She has been singing since her childhood and she was also part of the mythical group the Mandekalou.
She is considered today as an ngara, titles given to great singers, part of the upper class of griotism. Her mastery of Mandinka history and traditional songs make her one of the great pillars of the guardians of Mandinka culture.
